Indian badminton fans were in for a major shock on Saturday when the nation’s main medal contender PV Sindhu suffered a stunning semifinal defeat against World No.1 Tai Tzu-Ying. The 18-21, 12-21 margin defeat in the women’s singles semifinal meant, the Indian shuttler still has one final chance of getting her hands on a medal. On Sunday Sindhu will take on He Bingjiao in the Tokyo Olympics badminton singles bronze medal match. Further, the shuttler from Hyderabad will also aim to become the first Indian woman – and only the second Indian ever – to win two individual Olympic medals. If she does win the bronze on Sunday, Sindhu will join wrestler Sushil Kumar as the only Indians to win two individual Olympic medals.

Meanwhile, boxer Satish Kumar will be guaranteed an Olympic medal if he defeats world champion Bakhodir Jalolov of Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals. It will be a tough fight in the men’s super heavyweight (91+ kg) category, but Satish will back himself to produce a memorable performance. Elsewhere, golfers Anirban Lahiri and Udayan Mane will be ending their campaigns at Tokyo Games, while equestrian Fouaad Mirza will be competing in the second stage of the individual eventing.

In the final match for the country, the Indian men’s hockey team will have a difficult challenge in hand against Great Britain in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Manpreet Singh’s men will be chasing a first Olympic semifinals spot since the 1980 Moscow Games. The 1980 Olympics was the last time India won a hockey gold or a medal of any type.
