Monday’s action will be primarily focused on Kamalpreet Kaur, who will be eager to create history when she takes to the field in the women’s discus throw final at the Tokyo Olympics. If Kamalpreet manages a podium finish, it will be India’s first-ever track-and-field medal at the Olympics. She was one of only two discus throwers to achieve the automatic final qualification mark of 64m in the qualifying rounds. Kaur came in heavily strapped on her throwing arm and threw the discus at 60.29 meters, breaching the 60-meter mark. From that moment onwards, she only got better. Her second attempt came in at 63.97 meters. Kaur finished with a throw of 64.00 to successfully qualify for the women’s discus throw final. She finished second behind USA’s Valarie Allman who threw the discus a whopping 66.42 meters far.

Kamalpreet Kaur will be competing with two-time defending Olympic champion Sandra Perkovic of Croatia, World No. 1 Yaime Perez of Cuba and qualification topper American Varalie Allman among others for the medals. Meanwhile, Indian women’s hockey team will play the quarter-final against the two-time world and Olympic champions Australia. It will be a tall order for India, which will have to bring its ‘A-game’ on to have any chance of beating the Aussies.

Besides, sprinter Dutee Chand will be running in the heats of the women’s 200m. It has to be noted that she had earlier been eliminated in the women’s 100m heats. Equestrian Fouaad Mirza and his horse Seigneur Medicott will compete in the eventing individual jumping and hope to make it to the final. Finally, shooters Sanjeev Rajput and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar will compete in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions, which is the last shooting event of Tokyo 2020.
