Tokyo 2020: Robot helps carry the Olympics Flame: Day 13 of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 Torch Relay saw the Flame being carried by a Robot Flame in Toyota, Japan on Tuesday. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay started in Fukushima on March 25. The Flame will travel through the country’s 47 prefectures over the next 121 days before it finally makes its way to Tokyo for the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on July 23.

“A robot helping to carry the torch. When GOTO Akihito came to Toyota in 2007, his goal was to solve the problems people with physical impairments faced. The solution? Robotics, which today helped him carry the @OlympicFlame,” the #Tokyo2020 tweeted the video.

Torchbearers run for an average of 200m before they pass on the torch onto the next runner while giving a torch kiss pose.

The Tokyo Olympics will start from July 23-August 8 this year. The Games were originally planned for last year but were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After the Olympics was postponed, the Olympic Flame was transferred to the facilities of the Tokyo Fire Department for safekeeping. It was later kept alight at the Olympic Museum in Tokyo.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), had earlier stated that the route will see the Olympic flame travel through 859 municipalities, and will be passed at a short distance of the majority of the Japanese population.

Also, the IOC Executive Board (EB) took the decision to give accreditation only to people who have essential and operational roles at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. This was done in order to reduce the number of people at the games.
