Delhi Police on Saturday arrested two-time Olympic medal winner Sushil Kumar and Ajay, one of the accused in the Sagar Rana murder case. The wrestler was arrested from Delhi’s Mundka. Sushil was on the run since May 5 when an FIR was registered against him. Kumar and others accused are booked under IPC Sections 302 (murder), abduction (365), and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) at Model Town police station.

On May 4 midnight, Rana, of the 97-kg category Greco-Roman category, was beaten to death after a brawl at the Chhatrasal stadium.

“It was a property case gone wrong. He was in touch with us till before the brawl took place,” police sources told SportsLumo.

“The intention was not to murder, but to beat up Rana in the property case. There was a dispute on the said property which was on his wife’s name.

“It was earlier anticipated that he would be near UP, because his last traced location was near Meerut. However, he was finally caught in Punjab.”

The lower court had in the hearing on May 18 rejected Kumar’s bail. The judge said “the allegations against the accused are serious in nature. From the perusal of the record of investigation so far, it reveals that prima facie the accused is the main conspirator”.

“He’s not going to get bail, but the trial will go on,” the source added.

Reward for Sushil Kumar capture

Failing to catch Sushil and nine others linked with the murder of 23-year-old Sagar Rana, the Dehli police announced a Rs 1 lakh reward for news leading to his arrest.

Senior advocate Sidharth Luthra represented Kumar. In the application filed, Kumar said the investigation took place with a “a pre-determined and biased mindset”. It also claimed he was “innocent of all wrongdoings”. Luthra also added that Kumar’s passport was seized by the police.

Kumar’s bail application was listed for hearing before Additional Sessions Judge Jagdish Kumar. During the hearing, Public prosecutor Atul Shrivastava, appearing for Delhi Police told Rohini Court that Kumar’s passport has not seized.

“We have not seized his passport. We had kept the passport as we feared that he might fly away from the country,” he told the court.
