The United States of America (USA) has taken part in every Olympics except for the 1980 Summer Olympics. American athletes have won a total of 2,523 medals and another 305 (105 of them gold) at the Winter Olympic Games. The US is ranked first in the all-time medal table. Even if one is to look at all the medals won by Russia and Germany, leading the second-placed Russians by 402 gold and 917 total medals.

The United States of America is the most successful nation in the history of the Olympic Games. USA participation has the highest number of first places, a total of 17 times.

Michael Phelps’ Magic for USA

The individual tally list has been topped by one of the most successful athletes of all time– Michael Phelps. Phelps began his Olympic journey at the 2000 Games in Sydney. He took part in the 200m butterfly, finishing fifth. This was the only time he did not win at least six medals in Olympic Games. In Athens, he won six gold and two bronze medals, and in Beijing, he won eight golds from eight events. In 2012 in London, he won four gold and two silver. He came out of retirement to compete at the 2016 Games and ended his career with five gold, one silver in Rio.

The USA has always dominated basketball. The US women’s has never gone without a medal Olympic Games in which it has competed and has won eight of the 11 gold medals since the women’s event was first held in 1976. The men have won 15 gold, one silver and two bronze medals. The 1992 Dream Team, featuring the likes of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Charles Barkley, is considered one of the greatest teams at an Olympics.

The USA topped the medal table at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Artistic gymnast Simone Biles dominated her competition. She won the individual and team all-around, floor and vault, adding the bronze on beam. Swimmer Katie Ledecky also had a stellar 2016 Games, picking up four gold medals and one silver.
