Shotgun World Cup 2023: Prithviraj Tondaiman claims bronze

In the semi-finals, Prithviraj Tondaiman topped his group with a score of 22/25 to advance to the medal match.

Indian trap shooter Prithviraj Tondaiman claimed a bronze medal at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup 2023 held in Doha, Qatar on March 11. This was India’s first medal at the ongoing event. The tournament is being held at the Lusail Shooting Complex in the Qatari capital. Tondaiman narrowly missed out on qualifying for the two-man gold medal round from the four-man medal match. However, he ultimately secured bronze with a score of 20/25 after missing three of his last five shots. Turkey’s Oguzhan Tuzun, the two-time world champion, won gold with a score of 33/35. Great Britain’s Matthew John, the bronze medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, clinched silver with a score of 30/35. Naser Meqlad, a two-time Asian Games champion, was the first shooter to be eliminated in the medal match. He had missed two out of the first 15 shots.

In the semi-finals, Prithviraj Tondaiman topped his group with a score of 22/25 to advance to the medal match. He had scored 122 in the qualifying round to finish sixth among 118 competitors. His compatriots Bhowneesh Mendiratta, Zoravar Singh Sandhu, and Kynan Chenai finished 27th, 38th, and 49th, respectively, with scores of 120, 119, and 118. In the women’s trap shooting event, India’s Shreyasi Singh, the 2018 Commonwealth Games champion in double trap, qualified for the semi-finals with a score of 118. However, she failed to make the final four with a score of 21/25. Kirti Gupta finished in 36th place with a score of 110. Rajeshwari Kumari and Preeti Rajak came in 46th and 50th, respectively, with scores of 107 and 105.

Who won the gold in women’s event?

Australia’s Penny Smith won gold in the shoot-off against Slovakia’s Zuzana Stefecekova. While Alicia Gough of the United States claimed bronze with a score of 20/25 in the medal match in the women’s trap.
The Shotgun World Cup 2023 in Doha will conclude on March 12, with more events scheduled in the trap, skeet, and double trap shooting. The Indian shooting contingent will be hoping for more medal-winning performances in the remaining events. Earlier, Ganemat Sekhon equaled national record to finish ninth in the qualification in the women’s skeet. In the mixed skeet team, Sekhon partnered with veteran Mairaj Ahmad Khan, shot 143 but missed the opportunity to fight for the medal by just one point.

In the ongoing World Cup, United States is leading the medal table with five medal, including two gold, two silver, and one bronze. While Italy is placed second with four medals – one gold and three bronze medals. Australia and Turkey are third on the standings with one gold medal each. The second leg of the World Cup is scheduled from March 25 to April 3, 2023, in Larnaca, Cyprus.
