In the skeet mixed team competition at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup 2023 in Cairo, Egypt, Indian shooters Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Ganemat Sekhon took home the gold. The team won the competition by defeating Luis Raul Gallardo Oliveros and Gabriela Rodriguez of Mexico 6-0. Simona Scocchetti, a two-time silver medalist at the world championships, and Gabriele Rossetti, an Olympic gold medalist, competed for Italy and won the bronze. The Indian pair scored a combined 143 out of 150 in the 30-team qualification round, matching the Mexicans. Mairaj Ahmad Khan, an Olympian, shot 74/75 to earn his fifth senior ISSF World Cup medal.

The other competing Indian team, Anant Jeet Singh Naruka, and Maheshwari Chauhan finished 10th in the qualifiers with a score of 140, but they were unable to proceed to the medal rounds It was Ganemat’s second victory in the mixed team competition, and her fourth overall World Cup medal in shooting. Friday’s women’s skeet competition saw Ganemat Sekhon finish fourth in her ranking match, just missing a spot in the medal round. In the preliminary competition, she placed third. Mairaj Ahmad Khan had a disappointing performance in the men’s competition, placing 57th in the qualifiers.

“The Skeet Mixed Team’s victory at the World Cup Shotgun in Cairo was made possible by Mairaj and Ganemat Sekhon’s talent. In the championship match, they defeated Raul and Gabriela of Mexico 6-0. Keep ’em coming, guys,” the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) tweeted.

 Mairaj Ahmed Khan

In Khurja, Mairaj Ahmed Khan was born on November 2, 1975. He is one of the most accomplished shooters of India, being a two-time Olympian and an Indian skeet shooter. Khan qualified for the Rio Olympics in 2016 and also took part in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. He became the first Indian skeet shooter to make it to the Olympics. In addition to the Asian Shooting Championships, he has also won gold at the ISSF World Shooting Championships. According to reports, Khan was ranked 24th in the world in skeet in 2021.

Ganemat Sekhon

Ganemat Sekhon was born on November 29, 2000. She is a Chandigarh-born sport shooter in India. With Skeet, she excels. In March 2021, she helped India win a medal in the Women’s Skeet ISSF Shooting World Cup competition. Right-handed Sekhon also has a dominant right eye. Sekhon, then 15 years old, started shooting in 2015 under the guidance of her father, Amarinder Singh. At the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl in 2016, she competed on the international stage for the first time and finished in 33rd place.
