Indian Women's Ice Hockey Team Gears up for IIHF Championship 2023

The Indian women’s ice hockey team will compete at the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s Asia and Oceania Championship in Thailand from 30 April to 7 May. Tsewang Chuskit serves as captain, and conservationist Dr. Noor Jahan is in charge of the goal. Darrin Harrold, a Canadian, will coach the 20-man squad, which includes five debutants, with Tsewang Gyaltson and Amit Belwal serving as assistant coaches. The players will have their training before leaving on April 11 for Thailand. 

A sport that has gained popularity over the past decade in these hilly areas is being led by 18 female athletes from the Union Territory of Ladakh and two from the state of Himachal Pradesh. The sport of ice hockey has constantly grown in popularity and is actively practiced, not only as winter pleasure but also as a serious sport, as a result of the natural creation of ice throughout the winter months. 

Ice Hockey Association of India partnership with Royal Enfield and Sports Science India  

Royal Enfield, the oldest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, has assisted the Indian women’s ice hockey team to boost their Olympic aspirations. The assistance is an extension of the collaboration between Royal Enfield and UT Ladakh to promote winter sports in the area. The 20 players from Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh participated in a panel discussion after Royal Enfield and the Ice Hockey Association of India introduced the new uniform for Team India in the nation’s capital.

The conversation centered on the spread of ice hockey throughout the Himalayas, as well as the development of winter sports and tourism. Ice hockey, winter sports, and winter tourism are all growing in the Himalayas as a result of the collaboration between Royal Enfield and other partners. The goal is to create an ice hockey ecosystem that will, in the future, allow Indian players to compete at the sport’s highest levels, including the Winter Olympics.

The Indian Women’s Ice Hockey team has chosen Sports Science India (SSI), the sports science and rehabilitation institution, as its official partner. This accomplishment is the first of its kind for a state-level sports science center. Through the agreement, the squad will receive help in modern sports science and rehabilitation, including nutrition, injury management, and strength and conditioning.

“It’s truly a proud moment for all of us at the Ice Hockey Association of India as our girls prepare to compete at yet another major global championship. Our goal is to ensure that more people across the country see ice hockey as the serious competitive sport it is and not just a winter recreational game. India has huge potential when it comes to winter sports, and we’re glad that Royal Enfield has agreed to be a partner in our efforts to grow this sport and enable our players to compete with the best,” said Harjinder Singh Jindi, General Secretary, the Ice Hockey Association of India.

The IIHF Asia and Oceania Championship, previously called the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia, will consist of 18 Asian nations at various levels, including Kazakhstan, Korea, Japan, China, the United Arab Emirates, DPR Korea, Turkmenistan, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Hong Kong (China), Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Singapore, Malaysia, Kuwait, the Philippines, Mongolia, and Indonesia. The competition allows Asian and Oceania members that are not yet members of the World Competition Program  an opportunity to compete and gain vital game experience. It serves as a significant launching platform for the Asian Winter Games.
