The organizers of the Asian Games 2022 have released a new action plan aimed at ensuring a “zero-waste” event. Zhejiang province, where the Games will take place, is hoping to make Hangzhou, a zero-waste city. The organizers have launched the “Zero-waste Asian Games Improvement Action Plan” to prepare for the continental multi-sport event. The plan outlines a series of measures that aim to drastically reduce the amount of waste produced during the Games.

The plan includes promoting green accommodation, using paperless and renewable materials, and achieving energy conservation and a reduction in emissions. Hangzhou 2022 organizers will also be responsible for building a classification system for recyclables during the event. They will hold a seminar to promote zero-waste behavior, and publicizing the “zero-waste Asian Games” concept. Other recommendations include managing the pollution risk of hazardous waste and establishing a coordination mechanism for emergency disposal to prevent any problems.

What an Hangzhou 2022 official stated

According to a statement from Hangzhou 2022, “Through the implementation of the plan, Zhejiang will form the first ‘zero-waste’ standard system for a large-scale event. In the future, these valuable experiences will also be publicized and applied to the construction of zero-waste cities and other zero-waste events.”

This initiative is a significant step towards promoting sustainability and reducing waste in China, the world’s biggest polluter. In 2019, China emitted 10,065 million tones of carbon dioxide, nearly double that of the second-highest emitter, the United States. The Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games had to take place in 2022. However, due to rise in Covid-19 cases, the organizers postponed the games to next year. The Games will now take place from September 23 to October 8, 2023. The games will attract thousands of athletes and spectators from across Asia and around the world.
