Asian Games 2022: Qualification Process, Events, Standards

The Asian Games 2022 was scheduled to take place this year from Sept 10 to Sept 25, 2022. However, an upsurge in the number of Covid-19 cases in China postponed the games to the next year. The games will now be held from Sept 23 to Oct 08, 2023. A delay in the commencement of games implies that the sports enthusiasts will have to wait longer than usual for the sports extravaganza to commence. However, this might just turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the athletes whose aim was to make the cut for the games. Although, they have to go through a set of tough qualification standards that the Athletics Federation of India has set for the event.

Asian Games 2022: Qualification Process

Unlike the Olympics where qualifying marks are set for all nations, the Asian Games qualification requirements vary depending on the country. Athletes must meet the standards set by their respective federations within a predetermined qualifying period to be eligible for selection in the final squad. The selection committee chooses the athlete who they think has the best possibility of earning a medal if no competitors achieve the qualification standard. Based on prior performances and other considerations, each federation is given a predetermined amount of quotas. The federations can choose the final squad in order to fill up the maximum quota allotted to them.
