After their absence in the 2022 edition, Yachting and Taekwondo are making a return to the National Games 2023.
The coastal state of Goa gears up to host India’s 37th National Games, from October 26 to November 9, 2023. India’s prestigious multi-sport event, reminiscent of the Olympics, will witness Goa welcoming over 10,000 athletes, which is about 3,000 participants more than the last edition in Gujarat. These athletes will showcase their talents in 43 sports, both indoor and outdoor arenas.
Although initially scheduled to host the 36th iteration, Goa had to pass the torch to Gujarat in 2022 due to multiple delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, five vibrant Goan cities – Mapusa, Margao, Panjim, Ponda, and Vasco – are all set to host the sporting extravaganza. However, for track cycling events and golf, the events will take place in Delhi.
The inaugural National Games took place in 1924 in Lahore when India was undivided. Initially, they took the name ‘Indian Olympic Games’, a title they held onto until 1938. In this edition, new sports like Sqay martial arts, Rollball, Sepaktakraw, Kalaripayattu, Pencak silat, and Mini golf have been inaugurated. After their absence in 2022, Yachting and Taekwondo are making a return to the National Games 2023.
While sports such as badminton and weightlifting have already kicked off in the National Games 2023, the official beginning will be marked by the grand opening ceremony slated for October 26 at Panaji’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. In the last edition, the Services team clinched their fourth back-to-back title, with an impressive tally of 128 medals, which included 61 golds.
The LIVE Streaming of the National Games 2023 will be available on the DD Sports TV channel in India. It will also be streamed on the Prasar Bharati Sports YouTube channel and JioCinema.
