India’s ace archer and Olympian Atanu Das claimed the gold medal in the men’s individual recurve at the National Games 2022. Atanu defeated Gurcharan Besra of Services 6-4 in the final at the Sanskardam Sports Complex near Ahmedabad. After a 4-4 tie with Gurcharan, he succeeded in increasing the level. A nine on the third was enough to seal the deal after he produced two straight 10s. Reigning champion and multiple Olympian Tarundeep Rai clinched the bronze. In the women’s event, it was Sangeeta who took the gold medal, defeating Anshika Singh 6-2. Her performance enabled Haryana to win four of the five gold medals in the recurve division.

In the compound archery disciplines of the National Games held on Wednesday, Rishabh Yadav and Aditi Swami won the men’s and women’s titles. In a hard-fought final, Haryana’s Rishabh defeated Maharashtra’s Ojas Detale 148-147 to win the men’s individual gold medal. The bronze medal was won by Gurwinder Singh. Aditi from Maharashtra won the women’s individual gold medal by a tiny margin of 144-143 over Pragati from Delhi. The bronze medal went to Sakshi Chaudhary.

India’s one of the top archers, Deepika Kumari didn’t take part in the competition as she and Atanu are expecting a baby this December. Tokyo Olympian Pravin Jadhav was admitted to hospital on Wednesday after being diagnosed with Dengue.
