Legendary boxer Muhammad Ali’s grandson, Nico Ali Walsh, earned his first victory in boxing as he defeated Jordan Weeks by technical knockout in his professional boxing debut on Saturday. Ali Walsh is the son of Robert Walsh and Rasheda Ali Walsh, who is the daughter of Muhammad Ali. The 21-year-old signed a contract with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Boxing back in June and made his professional debut on August 14 in Oklahoma. He wore the boxing trunks that were originally made for his grandfather and earned a very comprehensive victory. Ali Walsh knocked his opponent, Weeks, out in less than two minutes.

The youngster showed great composure as he knocked out Weeks in a very short time. The referee stopped the match in the very first round at a time of 1:49. Ali Walsh revelled in his victory and remembered his grandfather after the match. He also said that it has been an emotional journey for him so far.

Grandfather Muhammad Ali ‘greatest who ever lived’

“Obviously my grandfather, I’ve been thinking of him so much. I miss him. It’s been an emotional journey,” Ali Walsh said as quoted by ESPN. “I think me and him (Weeks) made a little bit of history tonight. This lived up completely to my expectations,” he added.

Muhammad Ali, also called ‘The Greatest’ passed away just five years ago in June 2016. He was undoubtedly the greatest boxer to have ever graced the squared circle. He had a career that set records that were on a whole new level. It really was unlike anything fans had seen at the time. His unprecedented flair for showmanship and controversial stands made him one of the biggest icons of the 20th century, and his legacy still lives on.

It will be a massive task for Ali Walsh to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps, but he certainly has taken his first steps in the right direction. He believes that Ali is the greatest that ever lived. “It seems like a lot of pressure; to me, it’s just my grandfather,” said Ali Walsh, who was raised in the US city of Las Vegas. “He’s the greatest fighter who ever lived, maybe the greatest person,” he added. “I’m never wearing these trunks again,” he concluded.
