Milkha Singh clinically stable after testing positive, says hospital

Legendary Indian sprinter Milkha Singh is “clinically stable with decreasing oxygen requirement,” said Fotis. Singh was diagnosed with COVID pneumonia and got admitted to Fortis Mohali. Milkha was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, 91-year-old tested positive for COVID-19 last Wednesday.

“Mr Milkha Singh is clinically stable with decreasing oxygen requirement,” the hospital update read.

Jeev Milkha Singh said that the hospitalisation is a precautionary measure. The sprinter could have contracted the virus from the house help who had tested earlier tested positive. None of Milkha Singh’s other family members tested positive for the virus.

“Though his parameters seemed alright, we thought it is safer to have him admitted where he would be under supervision of senior doctors,” Jeev had told PTI on Monday.

Milkha Singh represented India in three Olympics

Milkha Singh is one of the tallest icons in India. The ‘Flying Sikh’ overcame numerous obstacles outside the sports field just like the great Muhammad Ali. He rightly shines as one of the brightest stars of Indian sports.

He was the first Indian athlete to win an individual athletics Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, a record which remained intact till 2010. Milkha represented India in three Olympics from 1956 to 1964. Singh got the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, for his sporting achievements.

The 1960 Olympic Games in Rome is the race Singh is most remember for. He finished fourth-place in the 400 meters. He had entered as one of the favourites. Milkha led the race for some time before easing off, allowing others to pass him and proceed ahead.
