Haryana claimed the most medals at the first edition of the Khelo India Youth Games in 2018, which was then known as the Khelo India School Games.
The fifth iteration of the flagship event under the Indian government’s Khelo India initiative, Khelo India Youth Games 2023, began on January 30 and will run until February 11, 2023. The various KIYG 2023 events will be held at 11 venues overall, dispersed across eight towns in Madhya Pradesh and New Delhi. At the 2023 edition of the games, almost 5,000 competitors are from 36 states and union territories of the country.
The athletes will fight for a whopping 1,936 medals, including 573 gold, 580 silver, and 783 bronze to be rewarded in 27 sports. The Khelo India Youth Games are organized in the style of a team championship, with medals earned by each individual or team counting towards their particular State or Union Territory’s medal tally. After the event, the State or Union Territory with the most gold medals is named the winner.
Haryana claimed the most medals at the first edition of the Khelo India Youth Games in 2018, which was then known as the Khelo India School Games. However, Maharashtra has been the champion of the games for two consecutive years, in 2019 and 2020. Haryana, the event’s hosts, successfully defended their title by capturing 137 medals at the KIYG 2021, including 52 gold, 39 silver, and 46 bronze. Maharashtra finished second with 125 medals, comprising 45 gold, 40 silver, and 40 bronze medals.
