Joydeep Karmakar’s son, Adriyan Karmakar, clinched the gold medal in the boys’ 50m rifle 3 Positions at the M.P Shooting Academy in Bhopal at the ongoing Khelo India Youth Games 2023. Adriyan dominated the competition right from the beginning after topping the qualification round with a personal best of 579. He qualified for the final with the highest score among all the shooters in the semi-final. In the gold-medal match, he got the better of Rajasthan’s Manvendra Singh Shekhawat by 16-12 to become the ultimate winner in the discipline at the Khelo India Youth Games 2023. Apparently, the 17-year-old shooter Adriyan started practicing this event about ten months ago.

Joydeep couldn’t contain his excitement obout his son’s achievement and shared this happy news on Twitter. In April 2022, Adriyan took the first position in the 50m rifle prone at the national selection trials – three and four, held in New Delhi. What shocked everyone was the fact that he had taken up the event only 18 days prior to the competition. Adriyan had to polish his abilities in the rifle 3 positions event in relatively difficult conditions at his father’s academy in Kolkata – which didn’t possess a 50 m range.

While he was training for the 2014 Asian and Commonwealth Games, the question had been following him back in India the entire time. He finally made up his mind in 2015, and his ideal training academy, the Joydeep Karmakar Shooting Academy, or JKSA, was launched with the help of many of his supporters and well-wishers. It took a lot of work to get everything set up and was even more difficult to secure the pricey machinery and range setup needed to accommodate both beginner and experienced shooters.
