ISSF World Championships 2022 Rifle/Pistol: Esha Singh and Udhayveer Sidhu win gold in 25m Pistol events, become Junior World Champions

Esha Singh and Udhayveer Sidhu claimed gold medals in the 25m pistol women’s and men’s events respectively in the ISSF World Championships 2022 Rifle/Pistol held in Cairo, Egypt.

In the medal match, Esha outperformed Chinese shooter Feng Sixuan with 29 great shots. Esha placed fourth in the initial qualification round with a score of 581(294 in precision and 287 in rapid). She then came in second place in her ranking match, just behind China’s Shen Yiyao with 11 hits. However, it was sufficient for her to advance to the medal match. In the medal match, the 17-year-old got off to a good start, striking four of five shots, which was better than each of her three opponents. After the second series, she was tied on eight with Hungarian shooter Miriam Jako. However, she established a commanding lead after the third set which helped her seize the gold medal.

Udhayveer clinched two gold medals in both 25m Pistol and Standard Pistol events in the Junior categories to consolidate second place for India at the championships. He won the gold, scoring a total of 580 (290 in Rapid and 290 in Precision) in the men’s 25m Pistol. Matteo Mastrovalerio (Italy) and Yangpan Liu (China) took home the silver and bronze medals respectively with scores of 579 and 577. India’s Sameer (567) and Unish Holinder (557) finished 16th and 18th respectively. Udhayveer then picked another gold, this time in the men’s junior 25m Standard Pistol discipline by topping the round with 568. Sameer secured a bronze medal in this event with a total of 567. China’s Yangpan Liu won another silver for his country with a second-place finish.

India is currently placed second behind China in the medal standings with four gold and three bronze medals.

1) 25m Standard Pistol Women Junior
India’s Tejaswini clinched the bronze medal with a total of 557. The Chinese shooters Sixuan Feng (580) and Nan Jhao (566) won the gold and silver medals.

2) Men’s 10m Air Pistol
Shiva Narwal finished eighth in the ranking round of the event. Earlier, he had entered the ranking round with a sixth-place finish in the qualifications (583). The top six shooters in the ranking round earned a quota for the Paris Olympics 2024. India’s Naveen had missed a spot in the ranking round by finishing ninth during the qualifications with a score of 579.

3) Women’s 10m Air Pistol
No women shooters could enter the ranking round of the women’s 10m pistol event. Rhythm Sangwan (576), Yuvika Tomar (574), and Palak (568) finished 17th, 25th, and 50th respectively.
