American gymnast Simone Biles created history as she completed a routine on Sunday that was previously thought impossible. Biles become the first woman in history to complete the Yurchenko double pike on the vault during a competition. What is even more impressive is the fact that she did the routine to near absolute perfection. She is already one of the greatest Olympians in the history of the sport, yet what she did over the weekend far exceeds any of her previous accolades. The only issue with the move was that Biles over-rotated and needed to take just a few steps back to get it right, as per American newspaper the New York Times.

“I was just thinking, ‘Do it like training. Don’t try to overdo anything,’ because I have a tendency as soon as I raise my hand to overpower things, which I did a little bit, but at least I was still on my feet,” Biles said. “It’s a new vault. I’m proud of how today went, even though it was a little bit rough and uncharacteristic. But it was okay,” she added.

Biles rightfully exuberated confidence after completing the move to near-perfection. She won the all-around competition where she did it and when asked why she would keep doing the move even if she was not going to be rewarded in a fashion that she wanted, she calmly replied, “Because I can.”

She still seemed to be in disbelief the following day as she tweeted, “I’m sorry but I can’t believe I completed a double pike on vault.”

MISSION TOKYO

The gymnast will now set her sights on her favorite stomping ground, the Olympics. She is one of America’s greatest Olympians and is considered one of the greatest of all time in the sport. Biles will go to the Tokyo Olympics as one of the favorites to win a medal and with the latest exploits, she will have that confidence as well.

She had a jaw-dropping performance at the 2016 Olympics in Rio as she bagged a total of seven medals including four gold medals and three bronze medals. The Olympian has won 19 gold medals at the World Championships since 2013.
