Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier planted the seeds for their highly-anticipated trilogy match late on Tuesday. McGregor and Poirier last faced off in UFC 257, with the latter emerging victorious. However, McGregor had won their first bout all the way back in 2014. The match will most likely headline UFC 264, with the event’s location currently undecided. Interestingly, the match will not be a title bout for the lightweight championship. The title has remained in limbo since Khabib Nurmagomedov retired after winning his final fight. However, Poirier chose not to take part in a title fight in lieu of completing his trilogy with Conor McGregor.

The verbal jousting was started by Poirier, who quote tweeted McGregor and told him he would see him on July 10 – the date for UFC 264.

Poirier’s tweet did not go unnoticed, however, as McGregor quickly shot back.

McGregor has a 22-5 record and will be searching for his first win since January 2020. Poirier (27-6), on the other hand, is unbeaten since his 2019 loss to Nurmagomedov.

“It’s fighting, man. I don’t think you ever really have (someone’s number). He’ll make adjustments and it’ll be a completely different fight,” he told Joe Rogan on his podcast.

“Like the first one and the second was different, the third one is going to be different as well. I’m going to make adjustments as well. I’ve got to switch it up, keep things fresh and keep him guessing.”

Although no venue has yet been decided for the event, UFC president Dana White is keen to hold it in Las Vegas.
