Mexico’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez said Thursday he will fight unbeaten American Caleb Plant for the undisputed world super middleweight boxing crown on November 6 in Las Vegas. The showdown will see Alvarez defend his World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) crowns against International Boxing Federation (IBF) Champion Plant. All of the super-middleweight belts will be at stake this fall. The Mexican superstar announced the news through social media. “This Nov 6th we’ll put Mexican boxing on top,” Alvarez tweeted. “Going for the missing belt!”

The fight was initially set for September before talks fell apart at the last minute over what Plant termed as “ridiculous requests” made by Canelo’s camp. Well presumably that got smoothed over and now this fight is back on, just at a later date.

The original plan was the fight night around Mexican Independence Day, Sept. 18th. However, that date fell through and despite reports of a different opponent for the Champ that date. Canelo’s quest for all the titles at 168lbs now moves to November.

Prior to even defeating Billy Joe Saunders via ninth-round TKO in May, Alvarez had laid out his eyes to become boxing’s first undisputed super middleweight champion. Moreover, he fractured Saunders’ orbital bone to collect the WBO title, Alvarez called Plant out as the missing piece to the puzzle. “I’m coming, my friend,” Canelo said in the ring.

ALVAREZ ON TOP OF THE WORLD

Alvarez has been on an amazing run over the past few years. Jumping between weight classes in world championship bouts, going as high as light heavyweight where he scored a 2019 Knockout of the Year against Sergey Kovalev. He piled up championships, he set the goal of becoming a four-belt champion at super middleweight. Furthermore, exploring the possibility of moving back to light heavyweight with rumored plans of fights with Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.

Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs) picked up his first major super-middleweight belt last December. He dominated Callum Smith to win the WBA and vacant WBC titles. After a mandatory title defense versus Avni Yildirim in February, Alvarez busted up Billy Joe Saunders’ eye in May to win the WBO championship. Canelo is likely favourite over Plant to become undisputed champion at 168 lbs.

PLANT AN EASIER OPPONENT?

On the other side, Plant (21-0, 12 KOs) won the IBF championship with a unanimous decision win over Jose Uzcategui. He dropped Jose twice. His string of title defence oppositions has been, put it mildly, underwhelming.

However, Plant has been just as vocal about wanting the fight to happen, looking for the biggest fight of his career. He won his title in 2019, beating Jose Uzcategui by unanimous decision. Plant’s title reign has been somewhat disappointing as he’s dominated middling or aging opponents.

UFC 268 ON THE SAME NIGHT

Additionally, it is hard to ignore the fact that on the same night as Canelo vs. Plant, UFC 268 will be on the other side of the country at Madison Square Garden in New York. Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and rival Colby Covington are scheduled as the night’s headliners. Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler serving as one of the featured bouts.
