The Tampa Bay Lightning will take on Florida Panthers at Amalie Arena (Tampa) in the NHL Preseason game on October 8. With just over three minutes left in a tied game, the Florida Panthers received their second power play in Thursday’s contest against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning. Brandon Montour, a defenseman who plays for Florida’s best power play unit, appeared to be in the mood for some Billy Joel. With 1:15 remaining in the game, Montour sent a shot past Andrei Vasilevskiy to give Florida a 3-2 preseason victory at FLA Live Arena.
Montour was allowed to play his custom goal song, “It’s Still Rock ‘n Roll to Me,” for the second time this preseason. The Panthers, who are 2-3 in the preseason, play the Lightning on Saturday in Tampa to round off the exhibition schedule (0-4). Montour remarked, “It’s good to [get one there], especially on the power play.” As we prepared for the season, we tried to work on it throughout the final few sessions. It’s wonderful to earn a quick win there, especially against those guys. Because it was a preseason game, the animosity between these two teams was not put on hold despite the fact that it had recently erupted.
Late in the second period, after tripping Steven Stamkos, Zac Dalpe got into a brawl with Cal Foote. As the scrum heated up, Dalpe suffered a serious injury and was forced to leave the game. Stamkos appeared to be rattled up on the play but continued to play the entire game. 3:34 into the game, Dalpe opened the scoring. A shot from Aaron Ekblad leaped off Vasilevskiy’s pad and landed directly on Dalpe’s stick. He placed it within the unblocked net. With 1:57 remaining in the first half, Aleksi Heponiemi converted a Sam Reinhart rebound into a goal to increase Florida’s lead to 2-0.
