Following the Mooseheads’ playoff loss, the Bruins informed Marchand that, rather than joining the club for the remainder of the season, he would be invited to summer training camp. Marchand was dissatisfied with the decision, which was rumored to be based on his on-ice demeanor, and he arrived at the Bruins’ 2008 training camp hoping to rehabilitate his reputation and prove himself as a solid player. He spent the 2008-09 season with Boston’s American Hockey League (AHL) club, the Providence Bruins, where he finished second in scoring among all AHL rookies with 18 goals and 41 points in 79 games. Marchand’s scoring continued into the playoffs when he scored seven goals and eight assists in 16 games.
The Providence Bruins reached the final four of the 2009 Calder Cup playoffs before being defeated by the champion Hershey Bears. Marchand began the 2009-10 season with Providence, but was called up to the NHL after recording six points in his first six games. On October 21, 2009, he made his NHL debut, assisting Michael Ryder’s goal against the Nashville Predators. After 11 scoreless games, Boston demoted Marchand to Providence, where he scored seven goals in 28 games. Later in the season, Marchand went on a 16-game point run in the AHL, earning him his second call-up. He appeared in 20 NHL games that season, recording one point and 20 penalty minutes.
