The Washington Capitals will welcome the New York Islanders to Capital One Arena for an NHL game on Wednesday. The Washington Capitals lost 4-3 in their last game over the Penguins. Washington instead stormed back, with Alex Ovechkin right in the middle of it. Ovechkin scored his 42nd goal of the season and 822nd of his career from his favorite spot in the left circle with 6:42 to go in regulation. Washington drew even when Dylan Strome flipped the puck into an open net with 2:44 to go in regulation.
Yet instead of sagging, the Penguins surged. Malkin stripped Washington’s Anthony Mantha near center ice and broke in alone on Kuemper. Seconds later, the puck was in the net and Malkin was on one knee celebrating while pumping his fists, the kind of display of raw emotion that’s become one of his trademarks. “It’s a huge goal for me, and two points for the team,” Malkin said.
Tom Wilson started the Capitals’ comeback with his ninth goal of the season 5:19 into the third. Kuemper stopped 36 shots, but was outplayed by DeSmith as Washington’s hopes of making a late push for a playoff berth took a serious hit. The Capitals are six points behind Pittsburgh with only eight games remaining.
The New York Islanders on the other hand won 5-1 against the Devils in their last game. Kyle Palmieri had two goals and an assist, Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves and the New York Islanders beat the New Jersey Devils 5-1 on Monday night. Pierre Engvall, Bo Horvat and Zach Parise also scored for the Islanders, who stopped a two-game losing streak and moved three points ahead of Pittsburgh for the first wild card in the Eastern Conference.
The Islanders improved to 16-5-0 in their last 21 games against the Devils, including 8-3-0 at home. New York also won a game following a shutout loss for the third time in five tries this season. The Islanders fell to Buffalo 2-0 last Saturday at home. “I thought we stayed on top as best we could,” Lambert added. ”That was a fast team we were playing.”
Engvall put New York ahead at 7:37 of the first. Palmieri skated in alone on Vanecek who made an initial save but Engvall knocked in the rebound for his 16th goal of the season — fourth since being acquired from Toronto on Feb. 28. “I feel pretty good,” Engvall said. ”We’re coming together.” Haula tied it with an unassisted short-handed goal at 6:15 of the second, his ninth.
