The Toronto Maple Leafs will welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning to Scotiabank Arena for an NHL game on Tuesday. The Toronto Maple Leafs won 2-3 in their last game over the Rangers. “It was a good third period for us to get a win,” Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. “And Woll was excellent.” Toronto finished second in the Atlantic Division, good for home ice against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the opening round. The Maple Leafs are making their seventh-straight playoff appearance, but haven’t won a series since 2004.
“I like how our group has come together since the trading deadline,” Keefe added. ”We’ve been a really consistent group.” The Maple Leafs rested captain John Tavares and also scratched forward Sam Lafferty, defensemen Mark Giordano and Erik Gustafsson plus goaltenders Matt Murray and Ilya Samsonov. The Rangers scratched defenseman Ben Harpur.
The Rangers reached the Eastern Conference Finals last spring, beating Pittsburgh and Carolina before falling to Tampa Bay in six games. “It’s a new year, a new playoffs against a team that we didn’t play last year,” Zibanejad said of the speedy Devils, who won 52 games this season. “We know what we have to do. We know what makes us successful … They are fast team, they play fast. They punish you if you make mistakes in the neutral zone.”
The Tampa Bay Lightning on the other hand won 5-0 against the Wings in their last game. Brayden Point scored his 50th and 51st goals, backup Brian Elliott made 32 saves and the Tampa Bay Lightning stopped a four-game losing streak with a 5-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings in the regular-season finale for both teams on Thursday night. Point joined Steven Stamkos (2009-10, 2011-12) and Vincent Lecavalier (2006-07) as the only Lightning players to reach the 50-goal mark. The playoff-bound Lightning will face the Toronto Maple Leafs in a first-round series starting next week.
“It means a lot,” Point said, “It means I play with good teammates, It’s pretty special. It’s something I’d never thought I’d ever do.” Point collected the rebound of Nikita Kucherov’s power-play shot in the slot, made a move around goalie Ville Husso and put it into the net with 9:13 left in the third for his 50th. The center added an empty-netter at 15:59. “He’s been the straw that’s stirred the drink for this team pretty much all year,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said.
