The game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers will take place at Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday, March 29 at 7:30 PM ET.
The Toronto Maple Leafs will welcome the Florida Panthers to Scotiabank Arena for an NHL game on Wednesday. The Toronto Maple Leafs won 2-3 in their last game over the Predators. John Tavares scored two goals and added an assist, Joseph Woll made 22 saves and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Nashville Predators 3-2 on Sunday night. Alexander Kerfoot also scored for Toronto, which has won two of its last three. The Maple Leafs are seven points ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning for second place in the Atlantic Division with Toronto having one game in hand. Auston Matthews had two assists.
“I thought we were good again,” Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said. “I’d like to have scored more with the chances that we had to extend our lead and make it a little more comfortable there. You leave them within striking distance and that’s why they have a chance to get a push there in the third.” Tyson Barrie had a goal and an assist, Cody Glass also scored and Kevin Lankinen made 31 saves for Nashville, which lost back-to-back home games over the weekend. The Predators remain five points behind the Winnipeg Jets for the Western Conference’s second wild-card berth, with Nashville having played two fewer games.
“I really liked how our guys played today,” Nashville coach John Hynes said. “I thought we came out fast, played a faster game. Competitive level was where we needed to be on the puck.” Tavares scored the game’s first goal at 18:06 of the opening period. With the Maple Leafs on a power play, Tavares beat Lankinen from the low slot after a slick tic-tac-toe passing sequence from Matthews and Mitchell Marner. “I’m just trying to focus on playing well and executing through all three zones,” Tavares said. “I trust my ability and my instincts to make plays.”
The Nashville Predators on the other hand lost 5-2 against the Senators in their last game. Gustav Forsling scored twice for the Panthers in their fourth straight loss. Sergei Bobrovsky finished with 21 saves as Florida remained three points behind Pittsburgh for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. Matthew Tkachuk was held without a point for the Panthers.
“I think for the most part we were pretty good. It wasn’t a bad performance. We just got into some penalty trouble and they capitalized on their chances,” Matthew Tkachuk said. “I thought 5-on-5 we dominated, but special teams did not go in our favor.” The home crowd got into the action they broke into a “Brady’s better” chant on a couple of occasions. “To be honest I thought it was awesome,” Stützle said of the chant. “I think we have to give Matthew credit, too. I think he has 97 points, he’s an unreal player and he had some chances tonight too, but in the end I’ll for sure stick with Brady.”
Brady Tkachuk got the Senators on the scoreboard first, getting a pass from Thomas Chabot and firing a slap shot past Bobrovsky for his 34th of the season 9:02 into the first period. Brannstrom made it 2-0 with 1:05 left in the opening period, picking up a loose puck in the right circle and firing it past Bobrovsky on a power play for his third. Forsling got the Panthers on the board 5:58 into the second, with a long one-timer from the left point past Sogaard.
