The Philadelphia Flyers will welcome the Montreal Canadiens to Wells Fargo Center for an NHL game on Tuesday. The Philadelphia Flyers won 3-0 in their last game over the Red Wings. Carter Hart made 29 saves, Scott Laughton scored and the Philadelphia Flyers won their third straight with an 3-0 shutout of the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. Kieffer Bellows also scored and Tyson Foerster had an empty-netter for Philadelphia in a matchup of two of the Eastern Conference’s worst teams.
Philadelphia began play with the sixth-fewest points in the league while Detroit had the 10th-fewest. Laughton netted his third in as many games and seventh straight against Detroit. “Just try to make the most of my opportunities and things are going in,” Laughton said. Philadelphia entered 30th of 32 teams in the NHL, averaging 2.68 goals per contest. But the Flyers have 26 goals in the current seven-game homestand, which ends Tuesday against Montreal when they will try to tie their season high for consecutive victories.
The 21-year-old Foerster’s emergence has boosted Philadelphia’s offense. He has seven points in eight games since his call-up from Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League. “He has played really good,” Philadelphia coach John Tortorella said. Hart has been Philadelphia’s best player all season. He recorded his second shutout of the season and fifth of his career. “I just think he’s in a little bit of a zone,” Tortorella said. “He just stays within himself. He hasn’t skipped a beat this year. He’s kept his consistency and never changes how he goes about his business. Really important.”
The Montreal Canadiens on the other hand won 3-4 against the Sabres in their last game. Brendan Gallagher and the Montreal Canadiens rallied back to avoid playoff elimination with less than three weeks left in their season. The Buffalo Sabres, meanwhile, are running out of chances to stay in the Eastern Conference wild-card hunt.
Gallagher forced overtime by scoring his 200th career goal, and Michael Pezzetta scored the decisive shootout goal in a 4-3 win over the Sabres on Monday night. “It’s one of those things I think we earned that chance. We weren’t fantastic but we did enough on the road tonight to get a win,” Gallagher said. “Smiles all around.”
The Canadiens could laugh, especially after Pezzetta celebrated his goal by putting his stick between his legs and riding it like a wooden horse — much like former NHL tough guy Dave “Tiger” Williams did during his 14-year NHL career spanning the 1970s and 80s. “I’m not sure we’ll see that again. One of a kind,” said Gallagher. “I’d be worried about falling over.”
