New York Rangers

The New York Rangers will welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs to Madison Square Garden for an NHL game on Thursday. The New York Rangers lost 2-3 against the Sabres in their last game. Artemi Panarin scored twice for New York and Igor Shesterkin finished with 37 saves. The Rangers have earned points in six straight games (3-0-3) and nine of their last 10 (6-1-3). New York pulled two points behind first-place Carolina in the Metropolitan Division and one behind second-place New Jersey. The Hurricanes and Devils both have two games remaining, and the Rangers have one.

“He made some real key saves for them You have to give the kid credit,” Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said about the Sabres’ 21-year-old goaltender. ”Fortunately we’re in a good spot. Teams like Buffalo are battling.” After the first six skaters failed to score in the tiebreaker, Owen Power tallied for Buffalo and Vladimir Tarasenko for the Rangers in the fourth round. Mittelstadt then beat Shesterkin on a backhand with a dazzling move in the fifth round before the Rangers’ Kaapo Kakko failed to convert.

Levi, who recently joined the Sabres out of Northeastern University, improved to 4-1-0. He pumped his fist in exultation and was engulfed by joyous Sabres teammates after the shootout concluded. “It’s so special to be here with this group of guys,″ said Levi, who denied Patrick Kane, Mika Zibanejad and Panarin in the shootout. “I’m having a blast. I hope we can keep it moving … I just have fun and try to stop pucks. The guys are awesome. I just did my job and came out with the win.”

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs on the other hand won 3-4 against the Lightning in their last game. Minor league call-up Joseph Woll made 46 saves, William Nylander had a goal and two assists, and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 on Tuesday night in a preview of an opening round playoff series next week. Woll, recalled on an emergency basis from the AHL Toronto Marlies, stopped Nikita Kucherov from the low right circle during a 6-on-4 with 1:31 to play.

After flying into Tampa on Tuesday, Woll was informed around six hours before faceoff that the NHL approved the transaction. Over several stints this season with the Maple Leafs, he has won five in a row after losing his debut. “It’s been a little crazy,” Woll said. “Pretty special to come out here and get the win.”

Toronto also got goals from Luke Schenn, Calle Jarnkrok and Ryan O’Reilly. Alex Killorn, Nick Perbix and Mikhail Sergachev scored for the Lightning, who have lost four in a row. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 20 shots. “It was a weird game,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. “I don’t know if anybody got anything out of that game. Clearly there was mandate to call some penalties. It was a lot them.”
