New York Rangers

The New York Rangers will welcome the Buffalo Sabres to Madison Square Garden for an NHL game on Monday. The New York Rangers won 0-4 in their last game over the Blue Jackets. Igor Shesterkin stopped all 20 shots he faced for his third shutout of the season and 11th of his career, and the New York Rangers beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-0 on Saturday night. Despite being outshot 12-9, the first period belonged to the Rangers who had a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes, courtesy of Vesey at 10:08 and Kreider 1:41 later.

Jimmy Vesey, Chris Kreider, Niko Mikkola and Vincent Trocheck scored, and Mika Zibanejad added two assists for the Rangers, who pulled two points behind New Jersey for second place in the Metropolitan Division and home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Devils played at Boston on Saturday night. “It’s our last game on the road until the playoffs, so it was good to play well on the road,” Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said. “I thought tonight was just a good, solid effort. It wasn’t a high-intense game, but it was exactly what we needed.”

After a scoreless second period in which the Rangers outshot Columbus 11-2, Mikkola put New York up by three goals five minutes into the third period with his first goal in 109 games dating back to Jan. 15, 2022. Trocheck notched the game’s final goal with 20 seconds left. “We’re trying to get ready for the playoffs and create good habits,” Zibanejad said. “But also winning keeps the mood up, and that’s what we’re trying to do the next two games here.”

Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres on the other hand won 4-3 against the Hurricanes in their last game. Rasmus Dahlin was determined to ensure the Buffalo Sabres would stay in playoff contention for another two days at least. The 2018 No. 1 draft pick continued punctuating what’s been his breakout fifth NHL season by scoring a goal, setting up two others and making a crucial block of a shot which led directly to Tage Thompson scoring the go-ahead goal in a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.

“All I can do is do my best and compete, and that’s what I did today,” said Dahlin, who joined Phil Housley as the only other Sabres defenseman to top 70 points in a single season. “I really wanted to win this game. I think that’s the simple answer.” Housley topped 70 points three times during his career in Buffalo, including an 81-point season in 1989-90.

Casey Mittelstadt scored twice and Buffalo improved to 6-1-1 in its past eight. The win guaranteed the Sabres keeping their slim playoff chances alive through their game at the New York Rangers on Monday. A regulation loss, otherwise, would have put 10th-place Buffalo in position to be eliminated later in the day and extend its NHL-worst playoff drought for a 12th consecutive season.
