The Carolina Hurricanes will welcome the Colorado Avalanche to the PNC Arena for an NHL game on Thursday. The Carolina Hurricanes picked up a fine 3-0 victory overChicago Blackhawks on Tuesday. Rookie Pyotr Kochetkov made 27 saves for his first career shutout. Jordan Martinook and Jordan Staal each had a goal and an assist for Carolina (10-5-1). Andrei Svechnikov scored his team-leading 12th goal, and Brent Burns had two assists.
The 23-year-old Kochetkov is the first goalie in Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise history to win his first five regular-season games. The 6-foot-3 native of Penza, Russia, made two starts last season. “He was dialed in,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “They had a lot of good looks. He was solid.”
The Colorado Avalanche put up a good fight but fell to a tight 3-2 loss against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. Mikko Rantanen and Artturi Lehkonen had goals for a banged-up Avalanche team that had won four in a row. Georgiev stopped 36 shots. Lehkonen made it a one-goal game early in the third, but Binnington came up big by stopping 18 shots in the period.
Kyrou gave the Blues a 3-1 lead with a power-play goal just 13 seconds into the third. The team has only four goals that were faster to start a third period, according to NHL Stats. “They got a couple of lucky breaks. That’s hockey,” Makar said. “I feel like we did a lot of good things. We did the right things to win that game.”
