James Wiseman will remain with Santa Cruz to complete his G League assignment after the Warriors elected not to send him to New Orleans for their game against the Pelicans on Monday night. Wiseman assisted the Sea Dubs in defeating the Salt Lake City Stars 120-104 in Utah’s Maverik Center when the undermanned Warriors were getting destroyed by the Pelicans.
In 23 minutes, Wiseman ended with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks. The former No. 2 overall draft selection hit his only three-point shot and went 7 of 10 from the field. He had a team-worst minus-7, had five turnovers, and three fouls called against him. Wiseman did make two dunks, one of which came after establishing a screen and sliding into the rim.
The Warriors rested Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Andrew Wiggins before playing the Pelicans on the second night of a back-to-back. They summoned up youngsters Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Ryan Rollins from Santa Cruz, which prompted Steve Kerr to be questioned about Wiseman’s absence.
Wiseman may have had the opportunity to play a significant number of minutes against the Pelicans, but the Warriors have a strategy for him and they won’t budge from it. The key goals right now are his growth and laying a strong foundation, and he wouldn’t have been able to achieve that if he had gone to New Orleans for only one game. Now Salt Lake City Stars and Santa Cruz Warriors will face each other again on November 22, 9:00 PM {ET}.
