On Wednesday, i.e February 22, the 2022–23 NBA G League regular season is scheduled to begin. This year’s G League season has a lot to be excited about, not the least of which is Scoot Henderson and the G League Ignite playing a complete 50-game schedule for the first time in the fledgling history of the development league.
Since roughly a year ago, Jason Hart has been drawing this analogy. The G League Ignite coach immediately thinks of an NBA player when he sees Scoot Henderson. “He’s like a young Derrick Rose,” Hart said.
That is very admirable. Moreover, a high bar. Before injuries altered his course, Rose was the top draft selection, the Rookie of the Year, an MVP, and a dependable All-Star. Hart persists with the analogy because he wants Henderson to keep improving. Henderson is maybe the only other player after Victor Wembanyama deserving of meaningful consideration for the top choice in the 2023 draft.
The 22nd season of the G League begins on Friday, and an 18-year-old who already appears to be NBA-ready may be the league’s biggest draw. Henderson is the point guard for the G League Ignite, a club dedicated to fostering the growth of young players ahead of the NBA Draft. In its first two seasons, it has featured three future top-10 picks: Dyson Daniels this year, Jonathan Kuminga and Jalen Green last year.
For each of the league’s 30 clubs, the schedule consists of 50 games. Both the Mexico City Capitanes and the Ignite are playing a complete schedule for the first time this season.
A single-elimination tournament to determine the season’s winner will take place at the Winter Showcase from December 19–22 after an 18-game Showcase Cup competition, which serves as the first part of the season.
The regular season’s 32 games begin on December 27. Each conference’s top six teams advance to the playoffs.
