San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs will welcome the Houston Rockets to AT&T Center for an NBA game on Saturday. The San Antonio Spurs won 110-99 in their last game over the Pacers. San Antonio Spurs have lived by a next-man up mantra all season and it extended to their bench Thursday night. With San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich out due to an illness, Jeremy Sochan had 22 points and 13 rebounds for his first career double-double and the Spurs defeated the Indiana Pacers 110-99.

“They’re probably trying to follow Pop’s leadership, even though he isn’t here,” said San Antonio assistant Mitch Johnson, who coached in Popovich’s absence. “They know what he would be saying.” The Spurs have won two straight after dropping a franchise-record 16 in a row.

Devin Vassell scored 18 points for San Antonio in his return after missing 25 games following arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. He shot 8 for 15 in his first game since Jan. 2. Popovich and lead assistant Brett Brown were out with non-COVID-19 illnesses. Popovich is expected to return for Saturday’s home game against Houston.

Houston Rockets

The Houston Rockets on the other hand lost 99-113 against the Grizzlies in their last game. Houston scored the next five points, including a 3 by Josh Christopher, but the Grizzlies used an 8-1 spurt to make it 98-74 with nine minutes to go. Jenkins took most of his starters out soon after that with the game out of hand. Bane discussed the difference in the team after halftime.

“We made some adjustments and we were able to get some stops that allowed us to get out in transition,” he said. “We were getting great shots in the first half and they weren’t falling, but in the second half they started to fall.”

Bane made six of the team’s 17 3-pointers and Dillon Brooks added four and finished with 16 points. Jalen Green scored 20 points and Kenyon Martin Jr. 19 for Houston. Green was disappointed the Rockets let things get away from them in the third quarter after staying close early.
