After striking the deal of the season in landing Kevin Durant at the 2023 trade deadline, the Phoenix Suns are now scouring the market for another ball-handler to aid Chris Paul and Cameron Payne, according to NBA insiders. At the present, the point guard buyout market is quite thin. Yet, according to reports, the organization is keeping an eye on New York Knicks player Derrick Rose.

The 34-year-old has dropped out of the rotation after not playing in a game since December 31. A buyout still appears improbable, but those close to the matter say it is not out of the question. According to insiders, the 2010-11 MVP is making $14.5 million this season and has a $15.6 million team option for 2023-24 that the Knicks will not exercise.

Derrick Rose’s contract with New York Knicks

Derrick Rose is an NBA veteran with 14 seasons of experience. He now plays for the New York Knicks, where he is in his third season. Rose was acquired by the Knicks from the Detroit Pistons in the 2020-21 season. Following the conclusion of the season, “D-Rose” agreed to re-sign with New York for the 2021-22 season.

Derrick Rose is in the second year of his deal with the New York Knicks. Rose agreed to a three-year, $43.56 million contract. He is expected to earn $14.52 million this season. The veteran point guard earned $13.44 million last season. “D-Rose” also opted to activate his club option and will play next season, where he could earn $15.59 million.

Derrick Rose’s career so far

Derrick Rose’s career has been on the decline after sustaining an injury while still playing with the Chicago Bulls. He’s no longer the dynamic MVP he once was, and organizations are hesitant to give him a chance because of his injury history. While Rose is still a good player, his game has clearly slowed compared to what fans and the NBA were accustomed to.

Rose first played for the New York Knicks in 2016 before joining the team for the 2020-21 season. This was around the time the Bulls chose to let go of their former superstar. “D-Rose” accomplished his best during that period, averaging 18.0 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game in 64 games.

The Knicks were plainly unhappy with the route they were taking with Derrick Rose as their franchise player at the moment. As a result, he was let go and forced to switch teams throughout the following five years. Rose has played for three teams in three years, beginning with the 2017-18 season.

Playing for Timberwolves and Pistons

The point guard joined the Cleveland Cavaliers before being moved to the Minnesota Timberwolves and then to the Detroit Pistons a season later. When playing for Minnesota and Detroit, he showed glimpses of life. In 2018, Rose averaged 18.0 points, 4.3 assists, and 2.7 rebounds with the Wolves. In 2019, he averaged 18.1 points, 5.6 assists, and 2.4 rebounds for the Pistons.

Despite his attempts to become the best he can be again, Rose has seen another slump and is currently struggling to find his position in the NBA while playing for New York. “D-Rose” is only averaging 5.6 points, 1.7 assists, and 1.5 rebounds this season. He’s also been dealing with a knee issue, which has reduced his playing time this season. If the Knicks let Rose walk, it would not be unexpected.
