Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves will welcome the Charlotte Hornets to Target Center for an NBA game on Friday. The Timberwolves lost 106-114 in their last game over the Wizards. Edwards had 18 of his 34 points in the first quarter to help the Timberwolves surge to a 30-10 lead. They were still ahead 99-92 with 4:38 left after three free throws by Kyle Anderson, before Beal hit a wide-open 3-pointer to spark his late surge.

Rudy Gobert had 17 points and 19 rebounds for the Timberwolves (31-30), who were derailed by their characteristic mid-game lulls and missed an opportunity to move a season-best three games above the .500 mark. With the Wizards wearing their hot pink “City Edition” uniforms in an ode to the city’s iconic cherry blossoms.

The Wolves were the hotter team for most of the game while new point guard Mike Conley continued to help Gobert find his offensive groove with the pick-and-rolls and lob passes they perfected together in Utah. But Edwards — who had six turnovers — began to make some rash decisions after his strong start, and the Wolves were outrebounded and out hustled down the stretch.

Charlotte Hornets

The Charlotte Hornets on the other hand won 120-110 against the Spurs in their last game. LaMelo Ball had 28 points, 10 assists and a season-high 12 rebounds and the Charlotte Hornets beat San Antonio 120-110 on Wednesday night to send the Spurs into the NBA All-Star break with a franchise-record 14-game losing streak. The 21-year-old Ball became the second-youngest player in NBA history to reach 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists in his career.

“He is an ultra-talented player for sure,” Hornets swingman Gordon Hayward said. “Great vision for sure and he’s all over the court. (With rebounding) he has an special ability to be in the right place at the right time. … He’s obviously a great player already and I think he will continue to grow into an even better one.” When told about the accomplishment Ball immediately correctly guessed that LeBron James was the only player younger than him to reach that pinnacle.

For Ball, it was his third triple-double of the season and franchise-leading ninth overall. The Hornets got another solid contribution from P.J. Washington, who had 22 points and 10 rebounds, and rookie Mark Williams added 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots as Charlotte won its second straight game. The Hornets had 12 blocks in all, including five by backup center Nick Richards.
