Boston and Denver will play each other on New Year’s Day of 2023 to kick off the first part of their schedule. The Celtics defeated the Clippers on Thursday, 116-110, to extend their winning run to four games. Denver has won six of its past seven games, including a victory against Miami on Friday by a score of 124-119.
With a season-long record of 21-5 after its first 26 games, Boston has been among the NBA’s hottest teams. The Celtics then dropped five of their following six contests, including three at home in the middle of December. Since then, they have recovered by winning four straight games, defeating the Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota, Milwaukee, and Houston.
Before playing a tighter game against the Clippers on Thursday and finally escaping with a 116-110 victory, Boston won the first three of those games by a margin of at least ten points. In that triumph, stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown both scored 29 points.
Denver began December with a discouraging three-game losing run but has since gone practically undefeated. With two defeats coming on the road against the Lakers and Kings, the Nuggets have gone 9-2 in their previous 11 games. Coming into this game, they had won seven of their previous eight games, including a victory against Miami on Friday by a score of 124-119.
In the game’s closing two minutes, Jamal Murray scored seven of his 14 points, while Nikola Jokic recorded his ninth triple-double of the year. The two-time defending MVP made 8 of 15 shots from the field, tying a team record for the most such games in a row.
