The game between the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers will take place at TD Garden on Wednesday, February 8 at 7:30 PM ET.
The Boston Celtics will welcome the Philadelphia 76ers to TD Garden for an NBA game on Wednesday. The Celtics won 99-111 in their last game over the Pistons. Jayson Tatum started slow and finished strong with 34 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, leading the Boston Celtics to a 111-99 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Monday night. “You know at some point, he’s going to be a superstar,” Pistons coach Dwane Casey said.
The All-Star forward missed his first five shots and had as many fouls (three) as field goals after missing 10 shots in the first half. Tatum made three 3-pointers and an array of driving layups in the third, scoring 18 points in the quarter to turn a seven-point halftime lead into a 18-point cushion. “He took what the defense gave him,” Celtics interim coach Joe Mazzulla said. “He got downhill. And he was aggressive. I thought he took some really good shots early in the shot clock to keep his confidence going.”
Celtics guard Jaylen Brown, who averages 27 points, missed the game with a non-COVID illness. Sam Hauser filled in, making his first start in two seasons, and had five 3-pointers in the first half when he scored all of his 15 points. Hauser said he was informed of the opportunity about 90 minutes before the game started. “It kind of took me by surprise,” he said. “I thought they would maybe plug someone else in to start. They called my number and I was ready for it. It was my first start ever in the NBA, and it was a cool moment.”
The Philadelphia 76ers on the other hand lost 108-97 against the Knicks in their last game. Joel Embiid had 31 points for the 76ers, going 18 of 19 from the free throw line, and grabbed 14 rebounds. Philadelphia had won nine of its previous 10 games. The 76ers also blew a 21-point lead in a 119-109 loss to Orlando on Monday. “It’s never easy,” Embiid said. “A 20-point lead in the NBA, that’s nothing. Any team can come back and that’s what they did tonight.”
Philadelphia went ahead by 21 points in the first quarter, but the Knicks continued to chip away and cut it to 53-51 at halftime. Philadelphia went back up by eight and led 79-76 heading into the fourth quarter. “I thought our second unit came in and struggled,” 76ers coach Doc Rivers said. “This is the second time that has happened. The same thing happened in Orlando. Both times, we were scoring too easy. The second group comes in and thinks this is an offensive game and they didn’t see the reason the first group got the lead was because of defense.”
