According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona have offered a new five-year contract to sign Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen in the summer transfer window. The Danish footballer is out of contract in the summer which makes him an attractive target to help strengthen the Barcelona defense. The Catalan club’s latest proposal was improved in the last 48 hours as they look to put this matter to bed, head coach Xavi is pushing to complete the transfer as he is keen to add the 25-year-old to his new project at Camp Nou.

The Dane is one of the most highly-rated central defenders in world football right now, who has all the capabilities to become a world class player. He played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s Champions League triumph last year and is an important player in Thomas Tuchel’s side. However he has seen a slight decline in his game time in the recent past, maybe due to his reluctance to sign a new contract.

The Blues have been pretty solid at the back this season and Christensen’s contribution has been immense. Their defense is second-best in the Premier League, having conceded just 18 goals so far. At 25, he is one of the very few defenders in the age bracket who has good leadership qualities and has the ability to marshal the back line.

Xavi is keen to bring in Christensen as Gerard Pique is not getting any younger at 34 and Eric Garcia still trying to find his feet at Barcelona. 21-year-old Garcia came in last summer with high hopes surrounding him, but has struggled to earn the trust of Xavi because of his error-prone nature.

Christensen is likely to get the nod ahead of Garcia and could partner Pique at the centre-back. But with Pique on the wrong side of 30, Xavi would be forced to rotate the back line to keep things fresh, therefore Christensen is likely to get enough game-time at Camp Nou if the move happens.

Apart from Barcelona, Bayern Munich are also interested in the Dane, and considering Barca’s current financial status it would be tough to decide which way the defender goes. As of now Barca looks favorites to get his signature.

Barcelona are going through a rejuvenation under Xavi and they have been very impressive off late, unbeaten in their last seven games in all competitions, having won the last three games convincingly by scoring 12 times and conceding just three goals. Xavi’s side is currently placed fourth in the La Liga standings with 45 points having played a game less than all their nearest rivals.
