The Super 10 is the pinnacle of a player’s achievement in Kabaddi. It is like taking a 10-wicket haul in a Test in cricket while it is like one player scoring more than five goals in a football match. The Super 10 is achieved when a raider scores 10 or more raid points in a single game. The points could be either bonus or touch points but not points awarded to the overall team, such as technical points. Now, imagine one player doing this on a regular basis. His exploits as a raider have transformed the fortunes of one team completely in the Pro-Kabaddi team and they are now the most dominant team in the tournament.

Pardeep Narwal, who hails from Sonipat in Haryana but has been the captain of the Patna Pirates in the Pro Kabaddi League, is in a different league of his own. His raids and his consistency in delivering Super 10s are the prime reason why Patna Pirates have won three out of seven titles in the Pro Kabaddi League while Narwal’s average of 14.19 points per match is a testament to his brilliance

The rise of Pardeep Narwal

After having gotten interested in Kabaddi in his youth in Haryana, Narwal debuted in the second season of the Pro Kabaddi League with the Bengaluru Bulls and in the following season was signed by the Patna Pirates and has been retained. In his debut season with Patna Pirates he became the highest point-scorer. From then on, he has consistently broken record after record.

His list of records are numerous. Narwal is the only player to be named the Most Valuable Player in two consecutive seasons of the Pro Kabaddi League. In Season 5, he scored a remarkable 369 raid points and was 150 points clear of the second most successful raider of the season. He currently holds the record for the most points in a single season, the highest points in a single game and the most points in a single raid in the Pro Kabaddi League. If one includes his tackle and raid points he has scored above 1000 points, making him the first raider to make a 1000 points mark in the history of the Pro Kabaddi League.

What is behind the success of Narwal? In an interview with the official Pro Kabaddi League website, the youngster revealed that his first coach, Naresh Narwal, was his mentor and he honed his skills brilliantly. “He has taught me everything I know in kabaddi. He trained me in everything, right from the basics like how to plant your feet correctly to mastering advanced kabaddi moves. The knowledge he imparted in me helps me hold my own against the best of defenders even today,” Narwal said.
