Hardik Singh is an Indian field hockey player who was chosen as the vice-captain of the national men’s hockey team. Representing the Indian Oil Corporation and the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board at the club level, Hardik began his journey from Khusropur in Jalandhar to the Mohali Hockey Academy in 2013 at the age of 15. His dedication paid off in 2016 with his appointment as vice-captain for India’s sub-junior Asia Cup team, leading them to secure the gold medal.
During the Hockey India League auctions, he was picked by Punjab Warriors for a whopping $39,000, which was way above his base price. Hardik Singh then went on to compete from sub-junior to junior levels and participated in Spain’s Four-Nations Cup. In 2017, a gap in international competitions led him to consider playing in the Netherlands. After being elevated to vice-captain of the junior national team, Hardik’s senior international debut came at the Asian Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy in 2018. He also contributed to India’s teams in the 2018 and 2023 Men’s Hockey World Cups. In 2022, he was honored with the Hockey India Balbir Singh Sr. Player of the Year Award 2022.
Hardik Singh played a pivotal role in India’s gold medal win at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou. He comes from a family deeply rooted in hockey. His father, Varinderpreet Singh Ray, is a DSP in Gurdaspur, while his grandfather, Preetam Singh Ray, was a coach with the Indian Navy. Hardik has credited his uncle, former Indian hockey player Jugraj Singh, as his mentor. His aunt, Rajbir Kaur, and her husband Gurmail Singh, an Olympic gold medalist, also significantly influenced his career.
