The Indian women’s hockey team got off to an absolute flyer of a victory as they routed Ghana 5-0 on the opening day of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Sangita Kumari, Neha and Salima Tete also got in on the action, scoring one goal each. After finishing fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, expectations have been high from the women’s hockey team. They finished third in the 2022 Women’s Hockey Asia Cup and 20-year-old Salima Tete was named the best young player of the competition. India will face 24th-ranked Wales in their second Pool A match.
Among other hockey action on the first day of CWG was a Pool B match between New Zealand and Kenya. It ended with the Kiwis recording a thumping 16-0 drubbing. The top scorer was Olivia Shannon who scored a hat-trick. Elsewhere, Scotland reigned supreme with a 4-2 win over South Africa.
