At the Chevron Championship 2023 on Sunday, American golfer Lilia Vu defeated rival Angel Yin in a playoff to win her maiden major title. The competition was held at the difficult and lesser-known Club at Carlton Woods, which is close to Houston. From a $5.1 million prize pool, which was the largest in the history of the competition, Vu’s victory earned her $765,000. Vu topped the leaderboard after starting the day four strokes behind the leaders with an amazing performance of five birdies, including key ones on the 17th and 18th holes, and one bogey. Her final round score was four under par, giving her a total of 278 which was 10 under par. Former leader Yin (72) faltered late in the game, forcing a tiebreak with two late bogeys while Vu anxiously observed from the sidelines.
In the playoff, Lilia Vu displayed poise by making a long birdie putt to secure the win while Yin struggled and hit her second shot into the water. Vu had previously won the Honda LPGA Thailand in February, earning her first tour victory. The result was a significant letdown for Yin, who had started the day tied for first with fellow American Allisen Corpuz (74). Yin had the lead after the 13th hole on the course with a virtually perfect performance, but she was unable to maintain her composure during the playoff and thus lost the lead. The Tokyo Olympics champion and World No. 2 Nelly Korda, who skipped the previous year’s tournament because of arm surgery, placed third with a score of 9 under 279. Korda was able to eagle the 18th hole despite her persistent putting issues.
Vu drew courage from the memory of her late grandfather, who had been a strong influence during difficult circumstances throughout the competition. Her grandfather passed away in 2020. However, on Sunday, as Vu competed for her first major championship, she found comfort in thinking back on his advice. Vu said, “‘I was getting really upset on the course, and I just had to remind me, ‘Grandpa is with you,'” she said. “And he’d be really disappointed if you were getting upset like this and that you didn’t get your act together, ” she added.
