Tottenham have reportedly bid GBP 34 million plus add-ons for the Atalanta defender Christian Romero. The club are said to have agreed personal terms with the central defender. If so, he could sign a five year deal with the Premier League club. Atalanta signed him in 2020 from Juventus on a two-year loan deal. The deal had a GBP 13 million option to buy him at the end of the season. Therefore, the Serie A club is not in a hurry to sell the highly rated centre-back.

Spurs have already agreed a deal to sign the Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini on loan. And the new boss Nuno Espirito is now looking to strengthen their defence.

According to Argentina publication TyC sports Spurs have offered a GBP 34 million plus GBP 8 million bonuses. Meanwhile Atalanta are said to value Romero at GBP 47 million and they are not under pressure to sell the 23-year-old since he will become their player at the end of the season. However, Sky sport Italia claim that Tottenham have agreed personal terms with the Argentine and he would sign a five-year-deal if the two clubs can negotiate a fee. And football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also tweeted that a GBP 47 million fee would be discussed.

Christian Romero – A top class defender

Romero has been a pivotal player for Atalanta in the heart of their defence. He has played a crucial role in ensuring a second consecutive Champions League qualification for the Italian side. The Argentina international scored three goals and registered five assists in 42 appearances last season. His impressive and consistent performances earned him the crown of Serie A’s ‘defender of the season’.

He was also part of the Argentina team that won the Copa America 2021 title by beating Brazil 1-0 in the final at Maracana. Even though he played only three games his performances were impressive enough to earn him a spot in the Best XI of the tournament. And Lionel Scaloni’s side kept a clean sheet in every game Romero played including the final. His aerial strength and ability to read the game helped Argentina to keep the Brazilian attack in check.

Spurs had a GBP 13 million bid turned down for Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu earlier this month therefore signing a central defender is a priority for them and Romero could be a very good long-term signing if they could get him in.
