Paraguay will host Bolivia at the Chaco Defenders Stadium for the World Cup Qualifiers on Wednesday. Both teams have endured a winless start to their qualifying campaign. Paraguay and Bolivia along with Peru are the only three teams without a win in the qualifiers after three games.
The White and Red could not find a way past Peru in their opening match. Despite their opponents being reduced to 10 men for the entire second half Paraguay failed to score. Added to that, Paraguay suffered successive 1-0 defeats away to Venezuela and Argentina. Subsequently, they are third from the bottom of the table. Finishing in the bottom three positions would mean Paraguay missing out on qualifying for the World Cup for the fourth successive time. Moreover, this would represent quite a barren run having reached each of the previous four World Cups. Everyone remembers the famous win for Paraguay which catapulted them to the quarter-finals. With six guaranteed qualification spots and one playoff spot on offer falling short would represent a major disappointment for them. However, the new manager Daniel Garnero is hopeful to improve his side’s chances by claiming his first win in charge against Bolivia.
Meanwhile, Bolivia has not qualified for a World Cup since 1994. The only two previous appearances on international football’s grandest stage came way back in 1930 and 1950. However, the Green are generally considered the whipping boys of South American football these days. Their current FIFA world ranking of 83rd is a testament to that. Besides Bolivia, the only lowest-ranked sides within CONMEBOL are Paraguay (52) and Venezuela (53). Bolivia did not have any chance against Bolivia and Argentina. However, their 2-1 loss at home to Ecuador on Friday was a shocking result for them to swallow. Naturally, the Green will look to bounce back against Paraguay more strongly.
