The players of Tottenham Hotspur will refund the match tickets for fans who travelled to St. James’ Park to watch their match against Newcastle United, which ended in an embarrassing 6-1 defeat on Sunday. Spurs conceded five goals in the opening 21 minutes of the Premier League thrashing, which spelled the end for interim manager Cristian Stellini.

After their poor performance, Cristian Stellini, the interim manager, and the club captain, Hugo Lloris, apologized to the Tottenham supporters for the team’s disgraceful performance. However, the Italian manager was fired on Monday, just before their next match against Manchester United. The decision to remove Cristian Stellini and appoint Ryan Mason as the new manager until the end of the season further worsened the crisis at Tottenham. The club’s CEO, Daniel Levy, had discussions with senior players after the defeat, which was deemed “wholly unacceptable” and “devastating”.

First team squad apologises to the travelling fans

The first team squad have decided to provide a complete reimbursement for the away fans who attended the match at St James’ Park. A statement from the Tottenham players conveyed this message: “We understand your frustration, your anger. It wasn’t good enough. We know words aren’t enough in situations like this but believe us, a defeat like this hurts.

“We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match tickets from St James’ Park.

“We know this does not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us.

“Together – and only together – can we move things forward.”

In 2014, Sunderland’s players reimbursed fans following their 8-0 loss to Southampton, and in 2019, Southampton’s players donated their wages to the club’s charity foundation after suffering a 9-0 home defeat to Leicester. Tottenham are now fifth in Premier League, six points behind the fourth place Man United who have two games in hand. Tottenham now host Manchester United on Thursday and will look to avoid a third Premier League defeat in a row.

“Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable,” Levy said on Monday. “It was devastating to see. We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine.”

The chairman of Tottenham, Daniel Levy, is searching for the fifth permanent manager in just four years.
