Manchester United are preparing to make a bid to Real Madrid for the centre-back Raphael Varane and are confident of completing the deal by the start of August, according to reports. The French defender has one year left in his contract and hasn’t accepted the contract extension offered by Real Madrid. He is considering his options outside Spain after spending a decade with Los Blancos. The 28-year-old has won three la Liga titles, three Champions league trophies and four FIFA Club World Cups with Real Madrid.

Sportsmail revealed that the World Cup winner has indicated that he wants to join the Red Devils. Although nothing has been finalised, with a price of GBP 50 million. Meanwhile for a player who has only one year remaining in his contract it is still considered too high a price by United.

Varane hasn’t yet returned to the La Liga giants for the pre-season. He is on holidays after being on international duty with France in the Euro 2020. Therefore he will make a decision once he is back.

He doesn’t want to go against the club’s wishes after spending 10-years with the Spanish giants. Instead, he will wait and see how the discussions between Real and United unfold.

Solskjaer looking to close the gap on city rivals

Real Madrid have already lost Sergio Ramos to PSG this summer. But David Alaba joined from Bayern Munich.

Thus new boss Carlo Ancelotti, who took charge of the team after Zinedine Zidane’s departure will have to make some decisions regarding the side’s defence. Especially after they lost their leader and captain Ramos.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United are set to finalise the transfer within 12 days. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side finished 12 points behind champions Manchester City in the Premier League last season. They are now looking to close the gap on their city rivals. They are also hoping to make the transfer of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund official this week.

Signing Raphael Varane will no doubt make United more stronger and the Frenchman will have to compete with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof for a place in the playing eleven.
