Lazio, who are now in second position in Group E of the Europa League, are getting ready to host Galatasaray at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday with the group’s top spot is still up for grabs. For Maurizio Sarri’s team, who are three points behind their opponents going into the last matchday, nothing less than a victory will do. The Biancocelesti defeated Sampdoria 3-1 on Sunday thanks in large part to the timely return of injured Ciro Immobile, who converted two penalties before Pedro sealed the outcome with three minutes remaining. Lazio scored four goals in back-to-back losses to Udinese and Napoli, so this result was the right way for them to bounce back. However, the erratic Biancocelesti are aware of the challenge they face this week because only a victory will ensure their advancement to the knockout stages. Lazio has gone unbeaten in their previous four Europa League contests and has preserved a clean sheet in three of their last four Group E games. They have also yet to give up a continental goal at home this season. However, a rampaging Galatasaray is not in the mood to relinquish first place right now.
Galatasaray has yet to lose a game in the 2021–22 Europa League group stage and has accumulated 11 points out of a possible 15; with just one point at the Stadio Olimpico, they will advance as group winners. When Marseille visited Istanbul on matchday five, Fatih Terim’s team was in imperious form, winning 4-2; however, their domestic standing has plummeted as they enter this match after going winless in four straight Super Lig games. A record of only two victories from their previous 10 away games in all competitions, including two draws and a loss from their most recent three, is also not encouraging, and only three goals have been scored in their two away Europa League games thus far. Galatasaray’s debut match against Lazio, though, was a happy event for Istanbul residents as Thomas Strakosha’s bizarre own goal gave the Turkish giants a 1-0 victory, and they haven’t stopped since.
Immobile, Lazio’s unlucky talisman, had to be taken off at halftime of the victory over Sampdoria due to a knee injury, and Sarri disclosed that the Italian was in “a lot of agony” as a result of the injury. The fact that Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was dismissed at the weekend has little bearing on this match; however, Patric has returned from his own suspension, and Mattia Zaccagni—who provided assists for two goals in Sampdoria’s victory—should continue to start on the left wing instead of Felipe Anderson.
As for Galatasaray, the duo of Sacha Boey and Omer Bayram are also out of the running, along with the team’s steadfast midfield lynchpin Alexandru Cicaldau, who tested positive for coronavirus. In Terim’s 4-1-4-1 with Cicaldau playing alone, Olimpiu Morutan might fill in as Mostafa Mohamed, Mbaye Diagne, and Halil Dervisoglu compete to lead the attack. Fernando Muslera, the team’s first-choice goalkeeper, is just one caution away from serving a suspension, but Terim won’t think twice about keeping his captain in the lineup as long as first place is still up for grabs.
