French giants Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on a five-year deal. The 22-year-old goalkeeper moves to the French capital on a free transfer from AC Milan after he was unable to agree on terms over an extension to his deal which ran out on June 30. He was the hero for the Euro 2020 winning Italian team as he ended up winning the Player of the Tournament award. Early in his career the goalkeeper made a name for himself with Italy’s U17s at the 2015 UEFA European Under-17 Championship and was voted player of the tournament.

His performances opened the doors to Milan’s first team in the 2015-16 season. During his six seasons with the Rossoneri, the Naples-born shot-stopper made 215 Serie A appearances along with 16 Europa League matches and 12 Italian Cup matches (including the 2016 and 2018 finals). Gianluigi Donnarumma told club’s website, “I am delighted to be part of this huge club. I feel ready to take on this new challenge and continue to grow here. With Paris, I want to win as much as possible and to bring joy to the supporters.”

Gianluigi Donnarumma made his first-team debut for the Azzurri at the age of 17 against France. Recently, the talented goalkeeper played a big part in the penalty shoot-out victories against Spain in the semifinal and England in the final. His impressive performances did not go unnoticed as he was voted UEFA’s Euro 2020 player of the tournament.

PSG Chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi said, “We are delighted to welcome Gianluigi Donnarumma to Paris Saint-Germain. We congratulate him on his UEFA EURO 2020 success and winning Player of the Tournament. I know Gianluigi will receive a warm Parisian welcome from everyone at the club, including his teammates, our staff and all the supporters.”

Gianluigi Donnarumma: A new chapter

After spending a considerable amount of time in Milan, the goalkeeper is ready for the new adventure in his life. “I am beginning a new chapter in my life. I grew up a lot in Milan, and now I feel ready for this new adventure here. Paris is one of the biggest clubs in the world, so I am proud to be here and I hope to achieve great things,” he told PSG TV.

“I’ve always watched Paris Saint-Germain matches on TV because they have always been an incredible team. It’s normal to dream of one day playing alongside all of the champions who are here. So for me, it’s really incredible. The Champions League is a very important competition and I have wanted to play in it for years. I haven’t succeeded in doing so and so I can’t wait to get a taste of it with Paris. And we will all try to win it.

“My objective is to grow more and more by training as hard as I can and never stopping. I have built up some experience in recent years. I feel ready to take on this new huge but magnificent challenge. I want to win as much as possible and to bring joy to the supporters.”

Gianluigi Donnarumma further opened up about his conversation with manager Mauricio Pochettino before moving to Paris. “I was able to speak with the coach before I came here, we talked a little bit, he was happy that I was going to sign. He is a great coach and a great man, so I am also very happy to be here with him. We hope to win something big together. This is also the best training. I’m going to train with the best in the world, so I’m bound to improve. I’m ready to train and play alongside these great champions,” he added.
