Hyderabad FC defeated ATK Mohun Bagan 3-1 in the Indian super League (ISL) semi-final first leg at the GMC Athletic Stadium on Saturday. ATK Mohun Bagan took an early lead through Roy Krishna before Manuel Marquez’ side equalised on the stroke of half-time courtesy of Bartholomew Ogbeche’s goal. The Nizams came out all guns blazing in the second half and scored two goals in the space of six minutes through Mohammad Yasir and Javier Siverio.

ATK Mohun Bagan started the match brightly as Liston Colcao was causing all sorts of problems to Hyderabad FC defence down the left flank. The Indian winger was taking on defenders and delivering crosses to the box on a consistent basis. HFC keeper Laxmikant Kattimani was tested by Joni Kauko from Roy Krishna’s through ball before ATKMB took the lead on 18 minutes.

Liston did some step-overs to get past Nim Tamang before delivering a teasing low cross for Krishna to slide home from close range.  This was the third assist of the season for Liston who is having an impressive campaign with eight goals already to his name.

The Mariners were controlling the game and there wasn’t much happening in Hyderabad’s favour therefore head coach Marquez decided to shuffle things a bit during the water break on the half-hour mark. The Nizams changed to a more stable 4-4-2 formation with Siverio and Ogbeche deployed up front and Aniket Jadhav and Mohammad Yasir occupying the wings.

The change seems to have worked for the Nizams as Ogbeche made a darting run down the middle, takes on five ATKMB player before passing it for Tamang who was brought down outside the box. But Siverio failed to make use of the set-piece from a good position.

HFC finally scored the equaliser in the first-half stoppages when Yasir’s corner kick from the right fell to Joao Victor at the far post who put the ball back into the danger area for Ogbeche to head home. Both sides went into the break all square. The first half was pretty even-steven as both sides canceled each other out and failed to create too many clear-cut goal scoring chances.

Juan Ferrando was quick to make changes in the second half as he introduced in-form Manvir Singh and Carl Hugh in place of David Williams and Lenny Rodrigues in the 53rd minute. Manvir’s absence from the starting XI was a bit of a surprise as the Punjabi lad is having a brilliant season having netted six times so far and has started most of the games for the Mariners this campaign.

HFC put their nose in front on 58 minutes courtesy of Yasir’s clean strike from outside the box which went past Amrinder Singh and into the back of the net. Meanwhile Tiri ran into a collision with Sandesh Jhingan whiled trying to block Yasir’s shot, the Spaniard was carried off the field on a stretcher and Hugo Boumous replaced him.

Siverio seals the win for Hyderabad

Marquez’s side were slowly finding their rhythm as the game progressed, playing clinical passes and one-touch football. HFC deservedly extended the lead with their third of the night on 64 minutes. Siverio headed home from Yasir’s corner kick.

In response, at the other end, Liston forced a decent save from Kattimani at the near post and the ball was cleared by the defence. Fifteen minutes from time, Kauko got a golden chance to reduce the deficit when Krishna’ cross found him in front of an open goal but the Finnish footballer’s effort went wide.

AKMB pushed  forward for a goal as Subhasish Bose’s header from a corner kick was well collected by Kattimani, who had a busy night.  HFC held on to the two goal lead and secured an all important win in the two-legged semi-final tie. ATKMB has a mountain to climb in the second leg which will take place at the same venue on Wednesday.
