There is precisely one week left for the football transfer window to slam shut. For the most part, it appears as if teams are content with the ins and outs that have occured so far and will not seek to make any more transfers. However, that doesn’t mean there will be no more transfer activity taking place. The market will sometimes throw up unexpected possibilities for clubs, or players will agitate for moves late in the day. Either way, there remains the possibility of a great number of deals being completed on or before deadline day i.e. August 31. Some of them, as it turns out, could involve some big names too.

Here we look at five major players who could be on the move sooner rather than later.

Harry Kane

Kane trying to force his way out of boyhood club Tottenham Hotspur only for chairman Daniel Levy to hold firm has been the longest-standing saga of the summer. Manchester City are clearly interested but their valuation of the Spurs skipper does not match Levy’s.

As such, the two sides are at an impasse despite Kane very obviously wanting to leave the side. He’s not started both of Spurs’ opening Premier League games, although he did come off the bench against Wolves.

Nevertheless, there remains a distinct possibility City come back with an even bigger bid. That would mean Kane becomes one of the most expensive transfers ever, although as things stand, there is no surety of it even happening.

Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe has been constantly linked with a move to Real Madrid, but PSG have always insisted he’s not for sale. However, new reports in France suggest the club are now open to a move. The reason? He has only a year left on his deal and is showing no inclination to sign a new one.

All signs point towards a Madrid move but their financial situation makes it tough. Newer speculation has seen the Frenchman linked to an English side, but there is nothing concrete just yet.

But with a week left in the transfer window, it is tough to rule out a sale. Especially given PSG’s sudden change of heart.

Cristiano Ronaldo

This is another interesting case. Ronaldo put out an Instagram post slamming speculation linking him with a move back to Real Madrid nearly a week ago. However, it then emerged that he reportedly asked not to start Juventus’ opening Serie A match against Udinese. The reason? He wanted to try and sort out any potential transfers.

Juventus are publicly adamant that he will stay on this season. However, he is in the final year of his contract and on a very high salary. Privately, Juventus would be open to a sale simply to get his wages off the books.

Yet as things stand, there are no bids for the Portuguese superstar. Transfer speculation has linked him to boyhood club Sporting CP and even Tottenham Hotspur – yes, really. But as of yet, there’s nothing set in stone – although so much can change in a few days.

Jules Kounde

The French centre-back has attracted plenty of interest from clubs outside of Spain, where he plys his trade with Sevilla. However, he has a massive release clause that Sevilla expect to be met in order for any potential transfers to take place.

Kounde has already turned down a move to Tottenham, preferring instead to play for a side in the Champions League. Chelsea can offer him that, but the question remains as to whether they would meet that asking price.

It doesn’t help matters that Chelsea would need to offload a player to make space for Kounde. Kurt Zouma is the one expected to make way but his wage demands are proving a stumbling block for interested clubs.

Saul Niguez

The Spanish midfielder has fallen so far down the pecking order for Atletico Madrid that he started the La Liga campaign at left wing-back. It is a position he is not comfortable in and has said as much in the past. Yet, the addition of Rodrigo de Paul to Atletico’s midfield options hasn’t helped his cause.

Saul would be happy to leave, and the club would be happy to get his wages off the books. Yet as things stand, there have been no major offers made.

The midfielder has been linked to a host of clubs though, including Manchester United, Liverpool and more recently Chelsea. Whether he makes a last-minute move remains to be seen.
