FIFA World Cup 2022: Twitter reacts as Spain and Germany clash to draw in Group E stage

Niclas Fullkrug, a substitute, helped Germany earn a crucial point in a 1-1 draw with Spain on Sunday night at Qatar's Al Bayt Stadium to keep the four-time World Cup champions' hopes of moving on from Group E alive.

After Niclas Fullkrug’s injury-time goal saved a 1-1 draw with Spain at the Al Bayt Stadium, Germany just about maintained their World Cup campaign. Following Japan’s dramatic defeat, Spain took the lead early in the second half thanks to Alvaro Morata. However, Fullkrug, another substitute, altered the momentum and earned Germany their first point of the 2022 World Cup. After Hansi Flick changed the lineup from that game, Germany competed admirably the entire time against a tough Spain team. Antonio Rudiger’s goal was disallowed for offside in the first half, and Jamal Musiala afterwards forced a fantastic save from Unai Simon.

Spain did score thanks to Morata, who came in early in the second half; Manuel Neuer was unable to save his delicate flip from close range. Musiala’s move was followed by a strong finish by Fullkrug, and Germany went on to win the match. Although they still place last in Group E, things could have been worse. Japan would have been out of the tournament even with one game remaining if they had lost against Costa Rica earlier in the day. In light of this draw, Costa Rica’s victory would be sufficient barring Japan’s ability to shock Spain once more. Despite not being able to duplicate the smoothness of their 7-0 victory on Wednesday, the side managed by Luis Enrique did move to round 16.

In the 73rd minute, Jamal Muisala’s shot with only the keeper to beat should have levelled the score for Spain, but Simon saved it to retain Spain ahead. Germany made a brave attempt and should have drawn level after having not lost three consecutive World Cup games in 60 years. As time ran out for Hansi Flick, Fullkrug received the ball by chance in the Spain penalty area. He made no mistake with the finish, hitting a stunning shot past Simon to give Germany their first point of the tournament.
